What is Killing Our Bees?
Share
A study by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, published on October 9, 2018, suggests that glyphosate—a common herbicide—may harm bees by disrupting their gut bacteria. This alteration in gut microbiota makes bees more susceptible to fatal infections. The study emphasizes the need for updated guidelines for glyphosate use, as current regulations assume it does not harm bees.
Key Findings from the Study:
1. Impact on Bees:
- Bees rely on specialized gut bacteria for growth and pathogen defense.
- Glyphosate exposure disrupts this gut microbiota, increasing their vulnerability to opportunistic pathogens.
- Erick Motta, the study's lead author, stated: “Our study shows that current guidelines are inadequate. While glyphosate isn’t the sole cause of bee deaths, it’s certainly a factor that should concern us given its widespread use.”
2. Mechanism of Action:
- Glyphosate targets an enzyme called 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) in the shikimate pathway, crucial for certain plants and microorganisms.
- Many bee gut bacteria contain the EPSPS enzyme, making them susceptible to glyphosate’s toxic effects.
- The disruption of gut bacteria affects bee health and their effectiveness as pollinators.
The issue of declining bee populations is not new. Other pesticides, such as neonicotinoids, have also been implicated in harming bees and other pollinators. In April 2018, the European Union banned neonicotinoids due to their impact on bees. Meanwhile, glyphosate has long been considered harmless by U.S. regulators despite growing evidence to the contrary.
4RBees: A Natural Solution for Healthier Bees
At 4RBees, we believe in organic and sustainable solutions to protect bees and the environment. Our PureWave Quantum Energy Cells do this by:
- Neutralizing harmful bacteria and pathogens (e.g., E. coli).
- Promote the growth of beneficial bacteria like Brewer's Yeast.
- Help bees build natural resilience against diseases and pests, including the invasive Varroa destructor mite, without the need for chemicals, pesticides, or antibiotics.
4RBees is committed to providing organic wildflower seeds to all of our beekeepers and to continue to undertake organic wildflower corridor projects to benefit all diverse pollinators, but we need your help!
